Holiday Season

The holiday season in Costa Rica includes Christmas, New Year’s, and Semana Santa, drawing both local and international travelers. During these peak times, hotels fill up months in advance, and popular beaches become crowded. Roads, especially smaller routes, can experience heavy traffic, leading to longer travel times. If visiting during the holidays, early planning is essential to secure accommodations and transportation.

Holidays offer unique experiences but come with higher costs. Major holidays fall within Costa Rica’s high season (December–April), when accommodations are already pricier, with rates rising even further during festive periods. To avoid last-minute hassles and inflated prices, it’s recommended to book travel plans at least three months in advance.

Christmas

Predominantly a family-focused celebration for locals, with most festivities taking place within households. Restaurants and bars, although open, may close a bit earlier than usual.

New Years

Can get livelier, especially in tourist hotspots. Many bars, restaurants, and hotels host New Year’s parties featuring music, drinks, and dancing, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Semana Santa

Occurring in the week leading up to Easter, is a significant holiday in Costa Rica. Schools go on break, and some businesses close during this time.

Independence Day

Costa Rican Independence Day, celebrated on September 15th, marks the country's 1821 freedom from Spain. It’s honored with parades, music, and traditional lanterns in a proud display of national heritage.
