Practical Information
The official currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC), with an exchange rate that typically ranges between 500–600 colones per 1 USD. While the exchange rate fluctuates, the U.S. dollar is widely accepted throughout the country, especially in tourist areas, hotels, and major businesses. Many restaurants, shops, and tour operators list prices in both colones and dollars, making it convenient for international visitors.
Despite the widespread use of U.S. dollars and credit cards, it’s still advisable to carry some local currency for small purchases, especially in rural areas, local markets, and transportation services like taxis or buses. Some remote locations may not accept credit cards or dollars, and using colones ensures you get the most accurate exchange rate when making cash transactions.
